In the summer of 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced by a Bolshevik tribunal to spend the rest of his life confined to an attic room at the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. The Count becomes friends with the hotel’s staff and guests, including the young daughter of the hotel’s new headwaiter. He also develops a close friendship with a fellow inmate in the attic, a former actress named Nina. Over the years, the Count adapts to his new life, finding meaning and purpose in small acts of kindness and human connection.

As the years go by, the Count witnesses firsthand the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. He bears witness to the brutal repression of the Stalinist era, as well as the hope and possibility of the Khrushchev thaw. Through it all, the Count remains a gentleman, always finding ways to help others and make the best of his situation.

The story concludes in the early 1980s, as the Count reflects on his long life and all that he has witnessed. Although he is now an old man, the Count has retained
