Randy Bragg, an enigmatic former lawyer, finds his languorous existence in Fort Repose jolted when he receives a cryptic telegram from his brother Mark, an Air Force Colonel. The pithy missive, bearing the haunting code ‘Alas, Babylon’, signifying an impending nuclear calamity, transforms Randy from a lackadaisical rake to a stalwart sentinel of his community.

As mushroom clouds bloom on the horizons, the denizens of Fort Repose must traverse the quagmire of this post-apocalyptic landscape. Helen, Mark’s wife, and her children find sanctuary with Randy, entwining their fates with his. The ebullient and indefatigable Dan Gunn, a physician, aligns with Randy in navigating the abyss of despair, nursing the wounded town back to health, one stitch at a time.

Lib McGovern, a fiercely independent woman, softens the turmoil within Randy’s soul as they cultivate an abiding love amidst the ashes. Fort Repose, once a tranquil sanctuary, burgeons into a crucible of human character, as its inhabitants weave an intricate web of courage, despair, and hope.

The venerable Alice Cooksey, a retired school teacher, becomes the guardian of knowledge and wisdom, shielding the young minds from the torrents of uncertainty, while Malachai, Randy’s friend and former employee, and his family exemplify the spirit of determination and camaraderie.

Through a gossamer haze of emotions, the pages of “Alas, Babylon” pulse with the heartbeats of its characters. Each one, a melody in the grand orchestra of humanity, facing the requiem of a world lost, and the reverberations of hope in rebuilding from the embers. Same narrator provided voice to Killers of the Flower Moon that’s why Will Patton was selected for this one. He also made the characters appear as real in Doctor Sleep.
