Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, first published in book form in 1878. The work is Tolstoy’s first great novel, chronologically the second of his prose works afterChildhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852–1856). Anna Karenina tells the story of a married aristocrat and socialite, Anna Karenina, and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story starts when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother’s unbridled womanizing—which sets off the novel’s powerful blend of emotional and social drama. Tolstoy’s writing style is distinguished by a distinctive combination of realism and lyrical prose.

This Anna Karenina earned the eighth spot in the New York Times’ 100 Best Books of the 20th Century.
