The good content, the characters, and the special Robert Petkoff.

Dr. Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses the many fears and misconceptions we have about aging and death in his book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. He discusses how the medical profession has failed to adequately address the needs of the elderly and the dying, often times treating them more like a problem to be solved instead of a human being with hopes, fears, and desires. He advocates for a more holistic approach to end-of-life care, one that takes into account the patient’s wishes and values.

Gawande’s book is a moving and eye-opening look at the end of life, and how we can do better by those who are nearing the end of theirs. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in this topic, and for anyone who will one day find themselves in the position of caring for an elderly or dying loved one.
