In the story, the narrator is invited to a dinner party where he meets an eccentric group of guests. One of the guests, Mr. Shorthouse, is a collector of rare and valuable playing cards. During the course of the evening, Mr. Shorthouse challenges the other guests to a game of cards, with the winner taking home a rare and valuable card from his collection. The game is played in a room with a table that has a hole in the center, and the guests must place their cards in the hole in order to see them.
