City of Ashes

The City of Ashes is the second novel in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. It was published on March 25, 2008, by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.

The story follows Clary Fray, a teenage girl who discovers she is a Shadowhunter, or someone who hunts demons. She and her friends, Jace and Isabelle Lightwood, must stop Valentine Morgenstern, Clary’s father, from opening a portal to another world that would allow demons to enter into our world.

The novel has been generally well-received. Critics praised the fast-paced plot and the development of the characters. The City of Ashes was also a New York Times bestseller.
