Frank Herbert was an American science fiction author best known for his 1965 novel Dune and its five sequels. Dune is considered one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time and has been translated into many languages. Herbert also wrote several short stories, most of which were published in magazines such as The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1920. He studied journalism at the University of Washington and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers. In 1952, he began writing science fiction stories and soon became one of the most popular authors in the genre.

Herbert died of a heart attack in 1986.
