After graduation, he worked as a journalist for a short time before moving to Seattle to attend law school at the University of Washington. He graduated from UW in 1987 and began practicing law.

In the early 1990s, Dugoni began writing fiction. His first book, The Bodies of the Fathers, was published in 1997. Since then, he has published nineteen novels, including the Tracy Crosswhite series and the standalone thriller, The Girl Who Was Taken. Dugoni’s books have been translated into more than twenty-five languages and sold in seventy-five countries.
