Gregory David Roberts is an Australian writer and former bank robber. He is best known for his novel, Shantaram.

Roberts was born in 1952 in Melbourne, Australia. He dropped out of high school at the age of 15 and became a heroin addict. He was arrested several times for drug-related offenses and, in 1980, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for armed robbery.

In 1982, Roberts escaped from prison and fled to India. He lived in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) for 10 years, working as a cook, a waiter, and a driver, among other things. He also became involved in the city’s underworld, running drugs and smuggling weapons.

In 1991, Roberts was arrested in India and extradited to Australia, where he served out the remainder of his sentence. He was released from prison in 1998.

Roberts returned to India and settled in Mumbai. He began writing Shantaram in 2001 and it was published in 2003. The novel was an instant bestseller and was adapted into a movie in 2009.

Roberts currently lives in India with his wife and daughter.
