British author Mary Elizabeth Braddon was born in London in 1835. Her father died when she was young, and her mother was left to raise five children on her own. Braddon is best known for her 1862 novel, Lady Audley’s Secret, which was a sensation in its day and is considered one of the first examples of the genre of sensation fiction.
