As dawn’s light pirouettes through the Los Angeles cityscape, Detective Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch, tormented by his shadows and tenacity, slips back into the folds of the LAPD in the consummate crime novel, The Closers: Harry Bosch Series, Book 11. A literary titan, Michael Connelly, meticulously stitches this thrilling account of police procedural and criminal revelation. The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1 started the series and since then none of the episodes have come low. Desert Star might be good but going along the series in sequence will be real delight.

Harry Bosch, with a rich tapestry of past experiences, returns after a three-year hiatus to join the Open-Unsolved Unit, a place where the echoes of cold cases beg for solace. Here, the tendrils of an old case clutch at him – the killing of a teenager, Rebecca Verloren, that took place in 1988. Alongside Harry, Kizmin ‘Kiz’ Rider, his once-partner now promoted, who dances through the Labyrinth of procedural hurdles, plays an instrumental role.

The tape on the case peels back to reveal an ostensibly simple incident – a swab of blood from a gun that belonged to the victim. The DNA matches a former white supremacist, Roland Mackey. As the duo of Harry and Kiz dive into the depths of the past, they are dragged through the cobwebbed annals of blood ties, vendettas, and deeply rooted racism.

Len Cariou, the narrator, with his resonant voice and cadence, sails through the dialogue and scenes, binding the listeners to the throbbing heart of the tale. His voice is like a wisp of a midnight breeze, both chilling and comforting as it delivers the weight and angst of each character.

The characters of the novel ripple through the pages; Irving, a high-ranking officer with his own agenda, adds a layer of politics and pressure. The victim’s parents, the Verlorens, are shadows of their former selves, shrouded in grief and despair, offering a poignant reflection on loss. The enigmatic Roland Mackey, whose sinister past leaks into the present, becomes a focal point of the investigation. Alongside these characters, the city of Los Angeles is a brooding, pulsating entity that breathes through the pages.

As the clock ticks, Harry’s relentless pursuit begins to uncoil the motives and entangled connections. The confrontation with Mackey brings the shadows of racism and sinister intents to the forefront. Kiz’s steadfast and clever handling of the bureaucratic strings helps steer the case through rocky waters.

When the revelations about Rebecca’s demise cascade like a torrential rain, the sense of justice is palpable but tinged with melancholy. The closing of the case is more than just a solved puzzle; it is a release, a catharsis for the ghosts that haunt the living and the dead.
