The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin, adapted from the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. It stars Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Max von Sydow, and Jason Miller. The film is one of a few productions to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with The Godfather and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and is the only horror film to have won an Academy Award for Best Picture. The Exorcist was ranked by the American Film Institute as the seventh-greatest American horror film in their 100 Years… 100 Thrills poll in 2001 and as the thirty-third greatest American movie of all time in their 10 Top 10 poll in 2008. In 2010, the Library of Congress selected the film to be preserved in the National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
