John Steinbeck was an American author who is best known for his novels about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. He was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. After high school, he attended Stanford University for a year before dropping out to pursue a career in writing. He worked as a laborer and a journalist before publishing his first novel, Cup of Gold, in 1929. His next novel, The Pastures of Heaven, was published in 1932.

During the 1930s, Steinbeck became a nationally known writer with the publication of several novels, including Of Mice and Men (1937) and The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1940. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962.

Robert DeMott is an American author and academic. He is best known for his work on the writings of John Steinbeck. DeMott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1941. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Baldwin Wallace College in 1963 and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in 1970.

DeMott began his teaching career at the University of Missouri. He later taught at Ohio State University and Denison
