The Shining is a novel by Stephen King that was first published in 1977.
The Shining tells the story of Jack Torrance, a writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Jack hopes that the solitude of the job will help him to finally finish his novel, but instead he descends into madness, terrorizing his wife and young son.
The novel was adapted into a film in 1980, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson. The Shining is considered one of the greatest horror novels of all time and is one of King’s most popular works.
The Shining was ranked at number nine on the New York Times Bestseller list.
