Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet, most famous for his fairy tales. He was born in Odense, Denmark in 1805. Andersen’s father, also named Hans, was a poor shoemaker. His mother, Anne Marie Andersdatter, was an uneducated washerwoman. Andersen was born in a poorhouse and his father died shortly thereafter. His mother remarried another poor shoemaker and the family struggled to make ends meet. Andersen was a thin, sickly child and was often teased by other children. Despite his hardships, he loved reading and was determined to become a writer.

Andersen’s fairy tales are beloved around the world and have been translated into more than 150 languages. “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Princess and the Pea,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” and “The Nightingale” are just a few of his most famous stories. Andersen died in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1875.
