The Toll is a novel by British author Neal Asher, published in 2002. It is set in Asher’s Polity Universe and follows the efforts of a Polity agent, known as a “drone”, to investigate a series of murders on a planet called Spatterjay.

The story The Toll teaches the lesson that it is never too late to make things right. The protagonist, a woman named Sarah, has been haunted by a decision she made many years ago, when she was a young girl. She made a split-second decision to take a shortcut through the woods, even though she knew it was against the rules. This decision led to the death of her friend, and Sarah has never been able to forgive herself. The story follows Sarah as she tries to make things right, even though it is too late. The lesson is that it is never too late to try to fix things, and that even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference.
