Total Recall is a 1990 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Ronny Cox. The film is based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”, which was originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

The story follows construction worker Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger) as he visits Recall, a company that can implant artificial memories, to have a virtual vacation implanted as a birthday present. However, Quaid discovers that his entire life is actually a false memory implanted by Recall, and that he is really a secret agent. As he tries to uncover his true identity and stop a rebellion against the ruling Martian government, Quaid must fight his way through an army of assassins sent to kill him.

Total Recall was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $260 million worldwide. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning Best Visual Effects. The film has been cited as one of Verhoeven’s best films and as one of the best science fiction films of the 1990s. A sequel, Total Recall 2070, aired as a television series in 1999.
